Why Does My Cat Bite Me?(Reasons & Solutions)
First distinguish whether it is a greeting or an attack
“Bite the hand or bite you to death”

There are 4 common reasons why cats bite people
- Greeting and communicating with you
Cats communicate with their companions through expressions, postures, and movements. Among them, light biting ≈ “reminding”, such as a mother cat biting a kitten to remind you, or a cat biting something you want to eat or play with, etc.

- Attacks triggered by petting, because they are dissatisfied with you for petting them for too long
Cats are not social animals, so they are not good at or used to long-term interactions. If they are petted for too long, they may become “impatient” and use a light bite to get you to stop.
- Playful aggression, treating you as a companion
Lack of proper guidance in childhood causes cats to always treat your hand as a plaything, biting and playing with it like they would a cat teaser, a toy, or other cats.

- Attacks caused by fear or pain have reasons
For self-protection, the “fight back” behavior is usually caused by reasons, such as restricting the cat’s activities, blocking the cat’s path, hurting the cat, etc.

How to avoid and prevent being bitten by a cat?
- Eliminate stressors that make the cat uncomfortable, avoid touching the painful parts of the cat, and treat the pain in time if it is caused by a disease.
- Summarize the length of time the cat is petted, stop before the cat becomes impatient, and avoid petting the cat’s sensitive parts.

3.Do not use your hands, feet or any part of your body to tease a cat.
4.When bitten by a cat, reject it in a way that the cat understands: get up and leave immediately, and do not make any other physical or eye contact with the cat. Do not yell or make the cat mistakenly think that you are responding; do not hit the cat with your hands, as it may be misunderstood as playing with it; or the cat may just want to bite you to say hello, but will no longer trust you if you are hit, and may even become stressed.

5.Encourage the cat’s positive behavior. For example, if the cat greets you with a meow instead of biting you, praise and caress it. If the cat bites a toy or a cat teaser instead of your hand when playing, reward it with snacks after playing.
6.Play with the cat more every day to consume its energy. If conditions permit, introduce a second cat of similar age.
